The Owl and the Grasshopper

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In the heart of a whispering forest, there was a wise old Owl named Olivette. Her favorite place in the world was her snug hollow tree, where she loved to curl up and drift off into dreams. The sun could shine bright, and the cheerful birds could sing sweetly, but Olivette preferred the cozy silence of her slumber.

One blazing afternoon, just as Olivette was about to doze off, a loud and scratchy song burst through the air like playful lightning. It was a cheeky Grasshopper named Gabriel, singing as loud as he could, his voice bouncing through the trees like a bouncy ball. “Listen to my fantastic tune!” he chirped, sounding more like a rusty gate than a superstar.

Olivette opened one eye and hooted, “That noise is dreadful! I’m trying to sleep!” But Gabriel didn’t notice her irritation. Instead, he sang even louder, puffing up with pride.

Olivette’s feathers ruffled with annoyance, but she was clever. She decided to trick Gabriel with flattery. “Oh, marvelous Grasshopper!” she called sweetly. “Your song is a treasure! I have a special potion that can make your voice even more magical. Come up and try it!”

Gabriel’s heart soared. “You think I sing magnificently?” he asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “Absolutely!” Olivette replied, her voice smooth like honey.

Without a moment's hesitation, Gabriel hopped up to the hollow, eager to taste the potion. But quick as a flash, Olivette sealed the entrance, trapping the unsuspecting Grasshopper inside!

With a satisfied smile, Olivette settled down, ready for her long-awaited nap. Outside, the sun shone, and the gentle breeze caressed the leaves. Gabriel, however, soon realized that the sweet words of praise had been a clever trick. As Olivette nestled her head beneath her wing, she dreamed peacefully, while the forest whispered a lesson about the dangers of flattery hidden in sweet sounds.
