In a kingdom filled with shadowy forests and old, mossy bridges, a kind man faced a terrible problem. He owed a huge debt to the scariest creature in the land—the Ogre of the Black Hills! This ogre was gigantic, with hands like dinner tables and teeth that looked like sharp stones. When he grinned, even the bravest souls would shake in their boots!
One gloomy day, the man stood before the ogre, his legs wobbling like jelly. "I have nothing left to pay!" he squeaked. The ogre leaned down, his breath smelling like old cheese. "Then give me your daughter!" he roared, slamming his fist onto the table, making the whole room tremble.
The man’s daughter, Lyra, was no ordinary girl. With bright, clever eyes and a quick mind, she was ready for anything. Instead of crying, she kissed her father goodbye and bravely marched into the ogre's rocky fortress, determined to face her fate. “Three tasks!” the ogre bellowed, his voice echoing like thunder. “Fail one, and I’ll have you for breakfast!”
The first task was a mountain of grain mixed with ashes. “Separate every grain by morning!” growled the ogre. Smiling slyly, Lyra whistled for her tiny red ant friends, who scurried in to help. By moonlight, every grain was perfectly sorted, leaving the ogre astonished.
“Impossible!” he shouted, but he wasn’t done yet. Next, he pointed to a dark underground lake. “Empty this lake with this thimble by sunrise!” With a determined whistling, Lyra summoned cheerful starlings, who drank and drank until the lake was just a muddy puddle!
For the final challenge, the ogre crossed his arms, grinning wickedly. “Choose wisely between two doors! One leads to treasure, the other to your doom!” But Lyra had been observant. The ogre’s left foot pointed at the right door! With a steady breath, she chose the right door, and it creaked open to reveal mountains of gold coins and sparkling treasures!
The ogre roared, his face turning redder than a ripe raspberry, but even the fiercest ogres must keep their promises. With her head held high and her treasures shining, Lyra returned home, the sound of the ogre's angry stomps fading away. As she ran into her father’s arms, she knew that with a clever mind and a keen eye, she could conquer even the biggest monsters.
