The Missing Camel

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a bright and shimmering palace adorned with golden pillars and colorful tapestries, a flustered merchant burst through the giant doors of Emperor Akbar's court. His turban was askew, and beads of sweat were dancing on his forehead. “Your Majesty!” he cried, his voice shaking with worry. “My beloved camel has disappeared!”

The court fell silent, eyes wide with curiosity. “But this is no ordinary camel!” the merchant exclaimed, waving his arms like a windstorm. “She carries sweet honey on one side and precious sacks of grain on the other! She's got a blind right eye, a limp left leg, and even a broken front tooth! Please, someone help me find her!”

Emperor Akbar turned to his clever advisor, Birbal, known for his quick wit and sharp mind. “Can you find this missing camel without searching for it directly?” he asked, raising an eyebrow, while the court gasped in disbelief. How could anyone find a missing camel without looking for it?

With a calm smile, Birbal replied, “I may not see your camel, but I can tell you exactly which road she took!” The merchant's eyes widened in astonishment. “You know where she is?”

“Not quite,” Birbal said thoughtfully, stroking his chin. “But I have sharp eyes and an even sharper mind!” The court leaned in closer, eager to hear more.

Birbal began his tale. “Look at the grass! It has been nibbled only on the left side! Your camel can’t see to her right because she is blind in that eye!” Everyone gasped. “And see these hoofprints? One drags in the dust—your camel is limping on her left leg!” More gasps echoed in the hall, and the merchant’s heart raced with hope.

“There are clumps of chewed grass along the path! The broken tooth means she could not hold her snacks, so she must have dropped her food!” The audience hung on every word, eyes sparkling with excitement.

Finally, Birbal pointed to a trail of tiny ants marching along, following glistening drips of honey, while birds chirped around scattered grains. “Your camel went east!” he declared confidently.

The merchant could hardly believe his ears. With a thankful nod to Birbal, he dashed down the eastern road, heart pounding with anticipation. He imagined his loyal camel waiting for him, surrounded by sweet honey and crunchy grains.

Moments later, he found her right where Birbal had said she would be! She stood munching happily on some grass, the sunlight glinting off her broken tooth. Overjoyed, he led his precious camel back to the palace, where cheers erupted in the court. Emperor Akbar smiled at Birbal, impressed by his clever thinking.

In that moment, everyone understood that sometimes, it takes a keen mind to uncover the mysteries that even the sharpest eyes cannot see.
