The Musician and the Bull

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a kingdom bursting with vibrant colors and sparkling palaces, there lived a cheerful Emperor named Akbar. He loved to host the most unique competitions, and today was going to be the strangest of them all! With a twinkle in his eye, he gathered all the townsfolk in the bustling courtyard and announced, “Today, the musician who can capture the COMPLETE attention of this magnificent bull will be crowned the greatest musician in all the land!”

Just then, a grand bull sauntered into the courtyard, its coat shining like dark chocolate under the warm sun. It chewed its grass, looking as if it had never heard the sweet sounds of music before. The crowd giggled, wondering how anyone could impress such a sleepy creature.

First, a master sitar player stepped forward, his fingers dancing over the strings, sending enchanting melodies swirling through the air. The courtiers closed their eyes, dreaming with delight, but the bull? It kept munching, unfazed. Next was a tabla player, whose energetic beats, thumping like a drumroll of thunder, made everyone tap their feet. But the bull merely yawned, unimpressed.

One musician after another played their hearts out—flutes, drums, and even sweet, singing voices filled the air. Yet, the bull remained a calm, furry boulder, showing no sign of interest. The crowd began to lose hope, wondering if anyone could truly win.

Then came Birbal, who chose a simple wooden flute instead of fancy instruments. With a mischievous grin, he took a deep breath and began to play sounds that were anything but ordinary. He echoed the moo of cows—MOOO! The gentle rustle of grass—SWISH SWISH! And even the clumsy honks of a trio of geese—HONK HONK! The courtiers looked puzzled, covering their ears, but the bull’s ears perked up! His head shot high, nostrils flaring, and suddenly, he trotted over to Birbal, dancing with delight!

“BIRBAL WINS!” Emperor Akbar bellowed, his laughter ringing out like a joyful bell. The other musicians stared in disbelief. “How could this be?!” they wondered, scratching their heads.

Birbal smiled, lowering his flute with a humble bow. “I played for a bull today! I understood my audience, and that made all the difference!”

The crowd erupted in laughter and cheers, realizing that sometimes, it’s not only about beautiful music but knowing who is listening that truly matters.
