The Fox and the Pheasants

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

The full moon cast a silvery glow over the enchanting forest, lighting up the leaves and flowers like stars sprinkled across the ground. High above, in a sturdy oak tree, a colorful flock of pheasants nestled together for the night. They snuggled close, fluffing their feathers and tucking in their little feet, feeling safe from any sly fox lurking below. But little did they know, Fox was nearby, his bright eyes sparkling with mischief.

With a clever grin, Fox thought, “If I can’t climb up to them, I’ll just have to bring them down!” Suddenly, he stepped into the moonlight, his fur shimmering like a silver cloak. He began to dance! He twirled around in a circle, his fluffy tail spinning like a shiny wheel. With a mighty leap, he soared into the air, twisting and turning like a magical ribbon caught in the wind. The pheasants watched in amazement, their eyes wide with wonder.

“Look at that!” gasped the first pheasant. “He’s so funny!” giggled another. Fox danced faster, zigzagging and tumbling with wild energy. The pheasants were mesmerized, their heads turning one way and then another, unable to look away from the dazzling show.

But as Fox spun quicker, the pheasants began to feel wobbly on their branches. “I don’t feel so good!” sighed one. “Me neither!” chirped another, yet they couldn’t tear their eyes from the spectacle. One by one, they lost their grip and PLOP! Down they tumbled, straight into Fox’s waiting paws!

In the moonlit forest, silence fell, broken only by the rustle of feathers. The clever fox had tricked the pheasants into leaving their safe perch. That night, they learned a valuable lesson: sometimes, what seems delightful can lead us astray, and it’s wise to keep an eye on what truly matters.
