The Monkey and the Baby

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a lively forest where the leaves danced and the birds sang sweet melodies, a special day was approaching. The animals were buzzing with excitement for the annual contest to find the most beautiful baby in the woods! All the proud mothers believed their little ones were the prettiest of them all.

As the sun peeked over the trees, fluffy lambs, graceful fawns, chubby bear cubs, clever fox kits, and tidy rabbits lined up in a sunny clearing, gleaming like shiny gems. Each mother whispered eagerly, “Oh, my darling will win!” Just then, Mother Monkey swung in from a crooked branch, cradling her baby close. Baby Monkey was long-limbed and had a funny flat face that looked very different from the other babies. Some animals giggled, but Mother Monkey simply smiled, showing no worry.

“Do you really think your baby is the most beautiful?” asked a curious rabbit, raising an eyebrow. With a gentle kiss on Baby Monkey’s head, she replied, “To me, he is the loveliest of all!”

As the contest began, the wise old owl and the sparkling parakeet admired the glowing babies. Just then, a mischievous squirrel darted out, making silly faces and causing a ruckus! Suddenly, Baby Monkey tumbled from his mother’s arms, falling into a pile of colorful leaves with a soft thud.

“Oh no!” gasped the animals, but Baby Monkey just giggled and rolled in the leaves, sending them flying like magical confetti! His laughter spread through the forest, filling every corner with joy. The owl and parakeet exchanged amazed glances, realizing they had witnessed something wonderful.

As the sun began to set, they announced that all the mothers were winners, for every baby was beautiful in their own special way. High in the trees, Mother Monkey held her baby tight, knowing that in her heart, he was the most precious treasure of all.
