The Grateful Man

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

In a magical forest in northern India, there was a peaceful monastery where five hundred monks lived together like a family. Each morning, before the sun peeked over the trees, they sat cross-legged on soft patches of moss, their faces serious like wise owls. But among them was Ananda, a monk whose smile sparkled like twinkling stars! While the other monks focused deeply, Ananda hummed cheerful tunes, filling the air with warmth and joy.

One sunny morning, the mighty king of Benares, with a frown that could cast clouds over the sun, visited the monastery. For weeks, he had been troubled by arguments among his ministers and fears about a rival king. As he entered, he spotted Ananda humming happily. “What is this nonsense?” the king grumbled. “That monk is not showing me the respect I deserve!”

Just then, the wise teacher of the monastery, an old monk with a flowing silver beard, approached the king with a twinkle in his eye. “My king, would you like to hear about Ananda’s past?” he asked.

Curious, the king nodded, and the courtyard fell silent, as if even the birds were eager to listen. “Ananda was once a king too, just like you,” the teacher began. “He had treasures and power, but he realized that they were heavy stones he carried in his heart. So he laid them down and found a freedom that sparkles like sunlight on water. Now, he has no burdens, just joy!”

The king sat beside Ananda, feeling the heaviness in his heart begin to lift. With each laugh shared between them, the forest seemed to glow brighter, and soon, the corners of his mouth lifted, too. Together, they laughed and smiled, and suddenly, the king understood the magic of being free from worries.

As the sun began to set, the once-grumpy king discovered that joy doesn’t come from what you have but from what you can let go. The laughter echoed through the trees, and the forest filled with light, as Ananda’s smile shone brighter than ever.

The Moral of the Story

"Happiness comes from letting go of what weighs you down, not from collecting more things."

Jataka tales carry the deepest wisdom — lessons of compassion, courage, and kindness from ancient times.
