The Mongoose and the Brahmin's Wife

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

Once upon a time, in a cheerful little village, there lived a kind Brahmin and his wife, who had just welcomed a rosy-cheeked baby boy into their cozy home. The baby giggled and cooed in his lovely wooden cradle, bringing endless joy to the couple. Nearby, a mother mongoose had a tiny pup, but sadly, she fell asleep forever, leaving her little one all alone and shivering.

Seeing the lonely mongoose pup, the Brahmin's wife felt a wave of compassion wash over her. She gently scooped him up, feeding him warm milk and bathing him with the same loving care she gave her son. As days turned into months, the two little ones grew side by side, chasing butterflies and playing hide-and-seek. They became the best of friends, their laughter ringing like bells in the sunny day.

But one sunny afternoon, while the wife went to the well to fetch water, she left the baby in the care of her husband. However, he had a sneaky plan to sneak off and beg for alms instead. All alone in the house, the baby slept peacefully, and the door was slightly ajar. Suddenly, a sly cobra slithered through the crack, its scales shimmering like dark jewels, hungry and dangerous!

The mongoose pup, ever watchful, spotted the intruder. His heart raced as he leaped into action! The room erupted in a flurry of hisses and growls as the mongoose and cobra danced around each other like a fierce storm. The cobra struck, but the mongoose darted away, determined to protect his beloved baby friend. With a final burst of bravery, the mongoose triumphed over the snake, panting but proud.

Just then, he heard his mother’s footsteps returning! Overjoyed, he dashed to the door, ready to show her his victory. But when the door swung open, the wife saw the blood and panic gripped her heart. Without a thought, she swung her water pot down—CRASH!

Rushing inside, she found her sweet baby still asleep, but beside the cradle lay the cobra, defeated. Shock washed over her as she turned to the mongoose, who lay still, his tail twitching weakly. Tears flooded her eyes as she realized the tragic mistake she had made. The cheerful village continued to buzz with life, but the warmth of the sun felt cold on her cheeks, teaching her the heavy lesson that love is precious and should always be protected, for a moment’s fear could shatter years of happiness.
