In the lively city of Delhi, there lived a miserly man named Ramu. He was so stingy that he squeezed himself into a tiny straw hut, barely big enough for a squirrel to wiggle its tail! Ramu munched on just a few crumbs each day, but he held a secret close to his heart. Hidden beneath a loose brick in his hut was a heavy iron box filled to the brim with shimmering gold coins and radiant gems. Oh, how he adored that treasure!
One starry night, a wild wind began to howl. Suddenly — CRACKLE! WHOOSH! — flames flickered to life, licking at Ramu's hut! The fire danced around him, casting spooky shadows on the ground. "My gold! My gems! MY LIFE SAVINGS!" he cried, his heart racing as he dashed around like a dizzy squirrel. Neighbors rushed outside with buckets, splashing water — SPLASH! SPLASH! — but the fire roared, hungry for more.
Just then, a greedy goldsmith named Dinesh squeezed through the crowd, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Fear not, dear Ramu!" he boomed, puffing out his chest like a proud rooster. "I will save your precious box! But first, you must promise me something very important!"
Desperate to save his treasure, Ramu nodded vigorously. "Anything! Just save it!"
With a sly grin, Dinesh continued, "You must promise that what I DESIRE to give you afterward will be yours, while the rest belongs to me!" Trembling, Ramu agreed, "YES! Just SAVE IT!"
Taking a deep breath, Dinesh dashed into the flames! CRASH! The fire crackled and hissed, but moments later, he emerged, singed and smelling like smoke, proudly holding the iron box. His grin faded into a wicked smirk as he declared, "I desire to give you... this empty box! The gold and gems are MINE!"
Ramu's eyes bulged in disbelief. "What? No! You promised!" They both shouted, their voices rising above the roaring flames. Just then, a brave neighbor shouted, "Let’s ask Birbal!"
In Birbal's grand court, the wise man listened closely as Dinesh bragged about his daring act. With a twinkle in his eye, Birbal asked, "Goldsmith, you said you would give the miser what you DESIRE, right?"
Dinesh nodded, his smug smile still plastered on his face. "Yes! Exactly!"
"And what do you desire most in the world?" Birbal prodded.
"The gold coins and gems, of course!" Dinesh declared proudly, puffing out his chest even more.
Birbal's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Then according to your own words, the very thing you desire — the gold and gems — must go to Ramu. That is your promise!"
The crowd erupted in cheers! Ramu clutched his iron box, his heart swelling with joy, while Dinesh's face turned a deep shade of red. With nothing but a lesson learned, he slinked away, his greed leaving him empty-handed.
