In a cheerful village nestled among green, rolling hills, there lived a grumpy old man named Hadrian. He had piles and piles of shiny gold coins that sparkled like stars in the night sky! But instead of sharing his treasure or enjoying life, Hadrian kept it all hidden under a big, heavy stone in his weeds-filled garden. Every night, he would sneak out with his flickering lantern, lift the stone, and count his coins as if they were the most precious things in the world. CLINK, CLINK, CLINK—what a magical sound!
One night, curious little Kaspar, Hadrian's neighbor, peeked over the garden wall. He saw Hadrian's secret and gasped! “Wow, look at all that treasure!” A playful idea danced in Kaspar's mind. That very night, while the moon shone brightly, he tiptoed into Hadrian's garden, digging up every single pouch of gold. With a giggle, he slipped back home, leaving Hadrian's treasure hidden beneath the stars.
The next morning, as the sun painted the sky with bright oranges and pinks, Hadrian rushed to his garden, heart pounding. “AAAAAAARGH!” he shouted. “My GOLD! It’s ALL GONE!” He stomped his feet in despair, his voice echoing across the village.
Hearing the commotion, Kaspar walked over, pretending to be worried. “What’s wrong, Hadrian?” he asked with a faux frown. “My GOLD! Every single coin! Stolen!” Hadrian wailed. “All those years of saving—GONE!”
With a warm smile, Kaspar picked up a plain grey stone from the path and handed it to Hadrian. “Here, take this. Put it under the same rock and count it every night.” Hadrian blinked at the stone in disbelief. “But… it’s just a stone!”
“Exactly,” Kaspar said, standing tall. “It will do you as much good as all those coins you never spent.” As Kaspar walked back to his flowers, Hadrian stood there, confusion swirling in his mind like a playful breeze.
Looking at the empty space where his treasure once lay, Hadrian felt a flicker of understanding. He realized he could have shared joy and laughter instead of keeping everything to himself. From that day on, Hadrian transformed! He began sharing warm meals with neighbors, helping those in need, and soon, his garden bloomed with laughter and color, much brighter than before. Hadrian discovered that the true treasure in life wasn’t gold, but the kindness and friendships he shared along his journey.
