The Mirror of the Mother

Japanese Folktales

A beautiful Japanese folktale of honour, kindness, and wonder — retold for young hearts.

In a cozy village nestled between two fiery red mountains, a gentle father returned home from the bustling city, cradling a magical treasure. It was a smooth, round mirror that sparkled like a silver coin in the sunlight. When his wife held it up, her eyes widened in surprise. “Oh!” she gasped, for the mirror reflected not just her image but her very spirit, dancing and smiling back at her! Her heart soared with joy, and she lovingly wrapped the mirror in soft silk, hiding it in her cedar chest, a special secret.

As winter’s chilly winds swept through the village, a quiet sickness settled in her heart, and soon she had to say goodbye. With a tender smile, she called her little girl to her side and handed her the mirror. “Whenever you miss me, just look into this, and I will be with you.” After her mother’s passing, the little girl cherished the mirror, unwrapping it each morning to see her mother’s warm smile and twinkling eyes. She shared her daily adventures—school days, festivals, and even silly clucking chickens—feeling her mother’s love wrap around her like a cozy blanket.

But soon, her father found a new wife, and the stepmother watched from afar, suspicious of the girl’s whispered conversations. “That child is using magic!” she hissed. Troubled, the father gently asked his daughter to show him the mirror. With tears glistening in her eyes, she revealed it. As he looked into the glass, he saw not just his daughter but the sweet face of his late wife, and a wave of memories washed over him.

Curious, the stepmother took the mirror, peering into it with greedy eyes. But instead of a lovely reflection, she saw her own sharp features glaring back. As she stared, her heart softened with realization. “I have been unkind,” she murmured, regret filling her voice. Gently, she returned the mirror to the girl and whispered, “Keep talking to your mother. She deserves to be heard.”

From that day on, the little girl continued her heartfelt chats with the smiling face in the mirror, and the stepmother began to see the beauty of kindness, filling their home with laughter and love once more.

The Moral of the Story
