The Miller, His Son, and the Donkey

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a sunny village hugged by rolling green hills, there lived a Miller named Bert and his bright-eyed Son, Timmy. One sparkling morning, they decided to take their fluffy, friendly Donkey named Dusty to the bustling market. Dusty had big floppy ears, a shiny coat, and a heart as gentle as a summer breeze. Together, they set off, laughing and chatting, with Dusty happily munching on the fresh, green grass along the way.

As they walked, they passed a group of travelers who burst into laughter. “Look at those silly folks! They have a Donkey but they’re walking!” they teased. Bert felt a flutter of embarrassment. “Timmy, why don’t you hop on Dusty? Let’s not look foolish!” Timmy scrambled onto Dusty’s back, and off they went, feeling proud and happy. But then they met another group who frowned and shook their heads. “That poor father is left behind! How rude!” they scolded. Bert’s face turned bright red. “Oh dear, we must fix this!” he sighed.

Timmy jumped off, and suddenly, Bert was riding Dusty. But soon, another group called out, “What a selfish old man! That boy walks in the dirt!” Confused and flustered, Bert thought harder. “Let’s both ride together!” he declared, and they squeezed onto Dusty, giggling as they trotted along. Yet, they met a loud group who shouted, “Oh, shame! That poor Donkey is carrying two!” Bert was bewildered. No matter what they did, someone was unhappy!

In a burst of silliness, Bert had an idea. “Let’s carry Dusty!” he exclaimed with a twinkle in his eye. They tied Dusty’s legs gently to a sturdy pole and hoisted him up, marching into town. Children squealed with delight, laughing and pointing at the funny sight. Dusty, confused and upset, kicked and twisted until—POP!—he broke free and tumbled into the cool river with a surprised “Hee-haw!”

Bert and Timmy stood frozen, mouths agape, as Dusty floated away downstream. They had started their journey with laughter and joy, but now, all they could hear was silence where their beloved Donkey had once trotted beside them. In their quest to please everyone, they had lost their precious Dusty. With heavy hearts, they learned to listen to their own hearts instead of the laughter of others, carefully finding their way home, wiser with each step they took.
