The Mouse That Brought Good Fortune

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

One sunny morning in the lively city of Benares, a wise minister admired the blooming flowers and the cheerful sounds of chatter around him. As he strolled, he noticed something in the gutter—a tiny, lifeless mouse. With a chuckle, he said, “Even something as small as that could spark a fortune!”

A young man, passing by with empty pockets and a hopeful heart, heard the minister’s words. His sharp mind raced with ideas as he picked up the mouse. “I can make something magical happen!” he thought, grinning as he hurried down the street.

Not far away, a shopkeeper searched for dinner for his hungry cat. The young man approached him, holding the mouse with a sparkle in his eye. With a laugh, the shopkeeper exchanged two shiny coins for the unexpected treat! Clutching the coins like treasure, the young man dashed to the bakery and bought sweet cakes, his mouth watering with delight.

Seeing a group of tired flower-pickers, he called out, “Would you like a sweet cake for a bunch of flowers?” Their faces lit up with joy as they traded colorful blooms for his tasty treats. The next day, he returned with a basket full of flowers, but trouble brewed in the sky—a storm was brewing! While others grumbled, the young man shouted, “Let’s help!” He gathered neighborhood children, and together they cleared the fallen branches, giggling as they worked.

When they sold the wood to the king’s potter, the coins kept multiplying! Days turned into weeks, and the young man discovered clever ways to turn small things into great treasures. He even found a beautiful ring on a grand ship and traded it for more than he could dream!

Years later, now rich and wise, he returned to the kind minister, sharing his incredible journey and offering half of his fortune. The minister, impressed by his heart and creativity, thought this clever young man would be a perfect match for his daughter. With love and laughter, the young man gained a family and used his wisdom to help others, forever grateful to the little mouse that started it all.
