The Merchant and the Genie

Arabian Nights Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wonder, magic, and timeless wisdom.

In a bright, sunlit village in ancient Arabia, there lived a kind merchant named Farid. He loved to journey across shimmering seas and bustling markets, collecting beautiful silks, fragrant spices, and sparkling gems. Every time he returned home, he would surprise his beloved wife, Layla, with treasures from faraway lands. But what Farid didn’t know was that Layla was a powerful sorceress, hiding colorful potions and mysterious powders in their cozy home.

One stormy day, as Farid sailed through choppy waters, a ferocious tempest swept in! Waves crashed like thunder, and the ship rocked fiercely until — CRASH! The ship sank, and Farid found himself stranded on a lonely island, waiting for a miracle. After five long months, a friendly ship finally appeared, and his heart raced as he hurried back to Layla.

However, when he knocked on the door, Layla opened it with cold eyes. She thought Farid was lost forever and had married another man! Before he could explain, she hurled a handful of sparkling powder at him. WHOOSH! A cloud of white smoke swirled, and Farid turned into a sad little dog with furry paws. Heartbroken, he roamed the streets, searching for food but finding only scraps.

One day, a kind farmer noticed him and tossed him a piece of meat. Farid happily gobbled it up, but the farmer raised an eyebrow when he saw the untouched bones. “No dog leaves bones behind!” he exclaimed. His curious daughter knelt down and said, “I think this is a person under a spell!” She quickly sprinkled him with a bowl of shimmering magical water. WHOOSH! In a burst of golden light, Farid transformed back into a man!

Grateful and excited, he rushed home, carrying a special bowl of shimmering water prepared by the clever girl. When Layla saw him, her eyes widened in shock. With determination, he flung the magical water at her! CRACK! A cloud of smoke erupted, and when it cleared, a grey mule stood in Layla’s place, braying loudly. Her new husband took one look and ran away, terrified!

Farid, now free and filled with joy, returned to the kind farmer and his brilliant daughter, thanking them with a bag of gold. He promised to cherish their kindness forever. From that day on, he lived happily, surrounded by true friends who appreciated him for who he was, understanding that wisdom often comes from the most unexpected places.
