The Merchant and the Donkey

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a cheerful village where flowers danced in the breeze and streams twinkled like diamonds, there lived a strong and clever Donkey. Every day, he worked hard for the Merchant, who filled heavy sacks with salt that the Donkey had to carry across a shallow stream. Oh, how the Donkey wished for a day when he could rest his weary legs!

One sunny morning, as he trotted to the stream, his hoof slipped on a slippery stone. SPLASH! The cool water sent a shiver down his spine, but when he stood up, he realized something magical: the sacks felt lighter! The water had washed away the salt, and suddenly, he felt as light as a feather. With a goofy grin, he danced his way home, dreaming of how clever he was.

The next day, eager to repeat his trick, the Donkey wobbled his legs again and went SPLASH into the water. But this time, the Merchant had filled the sacks with sponges! The saucy Donkey didn’t notice and splashed into the stream, ready to feel light again. But instead, the sponges soaked up all the water, turning his once-friendly load into a heavy, soggy mess! The Donkey staggered under the weight, feeling like he was carrying a mountain on his back.

With every step, the sponges clung to him, and he groaned as he made his way home, drenched and exhausted. When he finally flopped down beside the Merchant, he sighed deeply. “Oh dear, I’ve learned my lesson,” he thought, his heart a little heavier but his mind a lot wiser.

From that day on, the Donkey worked hard and honest, discovering joy in every step of his journey, knowing that the best way to carry his burdens was through true effort and perseverance.

The Moral of the Story
