The Mango Tree Witness

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a cheerful little village in India, an old traveler stood nervously in a grand courtroom. His heart raced like a drum, and his hands shook like leaves in the wind. He had saved his whole life to gather shiny copper coins, but his so-called friend stood there, smirking and claiming he had no idea what a copper coin even looked like!

The wise Birbal, known for his cleverness, turned to the old man. “Do you have anyone who can help tell your story?” The traveler sighed deeply, his shoulders drooping like a wilting flower. “No, sir. I gave him my money under a mango tree deep in the forest. Only that tree knows what really happened.”

A gasp echoed through the courtroom. Birbal’s mind sparked with ideas. “Then go fetch that mango tree! Tell it Birbal requires its presence in court. Hurry!” The old man blinked, startled, but rushed off as the friend grinned, thinking he had already won.

Minutes ticked by like slow-moving turtles, and the old traveler was still gone. Birbal paced, his thoughts racing. “Why is he taking so long?” The friend chuckled, his voice slick like syrup. “Oh, that forest is very far away!”

Suddenly, Birbal stopped and fixed his gaze on the friend. “How do you know exactly where that forest is?” The friend’s smile vanished like a shadow at sunset. Realizing he had just given himself away, the courtroom buzzed with whispers as the old man wandered in the woods.

At last, the traveler returned, looking a bit confused but holding a shiny mango, the very one that grew on that magical tree! He handed it to Birbal with a twinkle in his eye. The room erupted in cheers, and Birbal smiled knowingly, ordering the return of the traveler’s money. The sly friend slinked away, his head hung low, while the villagers learned that truth has a magical way of revealing itself, especially when you least expect it!
