The Man Who Carried Mountains

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

Once upon a time, in a land of rolling hills and sparkling rivers, lived a clever man named Tenali Raman. One sunny afternoon, he and his wife strolled along a dusty path toward the lively village of Hampi. Suddenly, they heard a loud commotion and decided to investigate.

As they approached the bustling crowd, they were amazed to see a gigantic bodybuilder, muscles rippling like mighty mountains, lifting an enormous sack of rice high above his head. Villagers gasped, their eyes wide as saucers, “Five hundred quintals!” they exclaimed.

With a twinkle in his eye, Tenali scratched his head and shouted, “THIS IS NOTHING! I CAN CARRY A THOUSAND TIMES MORE!” The crowd gasped in shock, and the bodybuilder dropped his sack with a loud thud, flexing his arms like a lion ready to roar. “Prove it!” he bellowed, puffing up like a balloon.

Tenali smiled slyly, “Oh, it’s no small task! I need time to prepare!” His wife gasped, tugging at his sleeve, “What are you saying?” Tenali shrugged nonchalantly, “I need six months of training, mountains of food, and this strongman to give me daily massages!”

The village chief, excited for the spectacle, eagerly agreed. And so, for six whole months, Tenali lived like a king! Feasting on honey and sweets, while the embarrassed bodybuilder gave him fluffy cloud massages. Tenali’s belly grew round and jolly, and he enjoyed every moment.

Finally, the big day arrived! The village buzzed with excitement as Tenali appeared in a brightly decorated cart, wearing a dazzling flower crown. The crowd cheered, their eyes sparkling with anticipation. The chief stood tall and shouted, “Begin!”

Tenali adjusted his crown, grinning widely. “I’m ready! Please place the hill on my shoulder!” A hush fell over the crowd, eyes widening in disbelief. “WHO will LIFT the hill?!” the chief sputtered, his mouth opening and closing like a startled fish.

With a playful shrug, Tenali said, “Ah, dear chief, that’s your problem! I said I would carry it, but I never said I would lift it!” Laughter erupted, and the chief turned as red as a ripe tomato.

With a chuckle, Tenali gathered his things and strolled home hand-in-hand with his wife, both giggling at the clever trick he had played. With a full belly and a happy heart, Tenali knew he had outsmarted them all, leaving behind a lesson wrapped in laughter.
