The Beetle and the Eagle

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a bright, sunlit meadow, a speedy Hare raced, his long ears flopping in the wind like sails on a ship. He loved the thrill of the chase, but suddenly, a dark shadow zipped down from the sky! It was a majestic Eagle, her sharp eyes locked on Hare, ready for lunch!

“Help me! Please!” Hare cried, spotting a tiny Beetle resting on a sparkling green leaf. The Beetle, no bigger than a pea, stood tall, her little wings shimmering in the sunlight. “Don’t worry! I will help you!” she declared boldly, zooming up towards the enormous Eagle.

The Eagle let out a loud, mocking laugh. “What can you do, little bug? Move aside!” With a swift swoop, she snatched the Hare and soared high into the sky, leaving the Beetle fluttering, her heart pounding with determination.

“I may be small, but I won’t give up!” the Beetle whispered, her tiny heart filled with courage. She decided to keep a close eye on the Eagle. Whenever the Eagle built a nest to lay her eggs, the Beetle watched carefully. “Just wait until she leaves!” she buzzed, excitement dancing in her wings.

As soon as the Eagle flew away, even for a moment, the Beetle zipped in, rolling the eggs out of their nest! One by one, they cracked on the rocky ground below! Furious, the Eagle built her nests higher and higher, thinking she could outsmart the tiny Beetle. But Beetle was always clever and quick.

Finally, the Eagle, in desperation, flew all the way to the mighty Zeus, resting her precious eggs in his lap. “Even a Beetle wouldn’t dare to bother the king of the gods!” she thought with a sly smile. But Beetle was fearless! She zipped around Zeus like a whirlwind, buzzing and flapping.

Annoyed, Zeus swatted at her, and in that moment, the Eagle’s eggs slipped off his lap, tumbling down like shiny raindrops! They hit the ground with thuds and cracks. The Eagle gasped, realizing she had underestimated the tiny Beetle.

Through her bravery and patience, Beetle had shown the mighty Eagle that true strength doesn’t always come from size. From that day on, the Eagle learned to respect even the smallest creatures in the meadow.
