The Lion and the Mouse

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a vibrant jungle alive with chattering birds and shimmering streams, there lived a majestic Lion named Leo. His golden mane sparkled like sunshine as he lounged beneath a grand tree, dreaming of exciting adventures. As the King of the Jungle, all the animals admired him. But on this warm afternoon, Leo was deep in slumber, drifting with the gentle breeze.

Meanwhile, a tiny Mouse named Mia was bustling about, searching for scrumptious seeds and nuts. In her eagerness, she scurried right across Leo's large paw! Startled, Leo woke with a booming ROAR that echoed through the trees, causing the birds to scatter in fright. With a swift swoop, Leo caught Mia in his mighty claws. The little Mouse quivered like a leaf caught in a storm, her heart racing.

“Oh, please, mighty King Leo!” squeaked Mia, her tiny voice trembling. “Let me go! I may be small, but I could help you one day!” Leo paused, then erupted into a thunderous laugh that rattled the leaves. “You? Help ME?” But as he looked into her brave little eyes, something warm flickered in his heart. “Alright, little Mouse. You’ve made me smile. You’re free to go.” Mia scampered away, her heart soaring with gratitude.

Days turned into weeks until one sun-drenched morning, Leo was wandering proudly when—WHOOSH! A trap fell from the trees, ensnaring him in a tangle of ropes! Leo roared and struggled, but the trap held tight. As darkness fell, he felt despair creeping in. Then, from the shadows came a familiar sound: nibble, nibble, nibble!

It was Mia! “Don’t worry, King Leo! I’m here to help!” she squeaked boldly. With her sharp little teeth, she began to gnaw at the ropes. One bite, then another, and with every nibble, hope blossomed in Leo’s heart. The stars twinkled above, and soon, with a triumphant snap, the last rope broke! Leo was free!

He shook his mane and let out a joyous roar that echoed through the jungle. “Mia, you saved me!” he exclaimed, gazing down at the brave Mouse. “You truly are a hero!” Mia's eyes sparkled as she smiled. “I might be small, but I have a big heart!” From that day on, Leo and Mia became the best of friends, exploring the jungle together and showing everyone that kindness and courage come in all shapes and sizes.
