The Last Leaf

Moral Stories

A heartwarming moral story with a lesson that stays with you forever.

In a busy city where the buildings tickled the clouds, lived a young woman named Johnsy. One chilly autumn day, she found herself wrapped in a cozy blanket, feeling very sick. Her cheeks were pale like a frosty winter moon, and she could barely whisper. Outside her window, an adventurous ivy vine climbed the brick wall of the next building, its leaves shining like little emeralds. But as the cool autumn wind blew, one by one, the leaves began to dance away.

Johnsy lay in bed, counting the leaves as they fell. "Twelve leaves left," she murmured softly. Then ten, then eight, then five. Finally, with a sad sigh, she told her best friend, Sue, “When the last leaf falls, I will go too.” Sue’s heart dropped. “Please don’t say that!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with worry. She tried to fill Johnsy’s room with laughter, but Johnsy just stared out the window, watching the leaves twirl down.

Determined to help, Sue rushed down to find old Behrman, a grumpy yet kind painter who lived nearby. With wild hair and paint-splattered clothes, he often grumbled and dreamed of painting his masterpiece. Sue knocked loudly, sharing Johnsy's sorrow with him. Behrman listened intently, his face growing serious.

That night, a fierce storm raged through the city. The wind howled like a hungry wolf, and rain poured like a thousand drumming fingers. Sue paced anxiously, worried for both her friend and the brave ivy leaves outside.

The next morning, Johnsy peered out, expecting bare branches. To her astonishment, one lonely leaf clung to the wall! It shimmered in the sunlight, strong and bright despite the storm. “That leaf is so brave!” Johnsy gasped, feeling hope bubbling inside her. “If it can hold on, so can I!”

Slowly, she began to heal. Each day, her cheeks grew rosy, and her laughter danced in the air again. But just as Johnsy blossomed back to health, Sue learned something sad. Old Behrman had been found outside, paintbrushes in hand and a lantern dimming beside him. He had ventured out into the storm to paint that one perfect leaf for Johnsy. Though he was sick himself, he had used all his courage to create his masterpiece.

Johnsy cherished not just the leaves but also the brave spirit of her dear friend who had painted them with such love. She learned that sometimes, the greatest acts of kindness come from the heart, and they can change lives in the most magical ways.
