The King's Monkey

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a dazzling palace adorned with sparkling gold and bright tapestries, there lived a mighty king and his cheeky pet monkey, Max. Max was no ordinary monkey. He slept on a fluffy cushion beside the king, shared tasty banquets, and even had the important job of holding the king's shiny sword! The king loved Max dearly, and Max would do anything to protect his beloved friend.

One sunny afternoon, the king settled into his velvety throne for a nice, long nap. Max, ever watchful, perched nearby, ready to guard against any trouble. Suddenly, a loud BZZZZZZ filled the air! A plump, lazy fly buzzed into the room, flitting about like a mischievous dancer. It landed right on the king’s chest, causing Max’s eyes to widen in alarm. How dare this pesky fly disturb the king's dreams!

With a determined swat, Max tried to chase the fly away, but it darted back and landed right on the king's nose! Max’s patience vanished like a puff of smoke. In a moment of frenzy, he grabbed the king’s shiny sword and lifted it high above his head, ready to defeat the buzzing intruder once and for all. With a mighty WHOOSH, Max swung the sword down with all his might—CLANG!

The sword struck the marble floor, and the loud noise woke the king with a start! He gasped in shock, feeling a sharp sting on his arm. Max’s heart sank as he saw the king's injury. He had only wanted to protect him, but in his rush, he had caused harm instead.

From that day forward, the king decided no sharp objects would be allowed near Max. The once joyful monkey now sat alone, filled with sadness. Just then, a wise old minister approached him, saying, "Dear Max, loyalty is wonderful, but you must think wisely too."

Max listened intently, realizing that love without wisdom could lead to trouble. With a flick of his tail and a gleam in his eye, Max promised to protect the king with both love and cleverness. Their bond grew even stronger, shining brightly with both loyalty and wisdom.
