The King's Grain and the Chessboard

Moral Stories

A heartwarming moral story with a lesson that stays with you forever.

In a kingdom filled with sparkling castles and golden fields, there lived a clever inventor named Sissa. With bright eyes and a heart full of dreams, Sissa created a magical game called chess. The pieces glimmered like jewels, and the board twinkled like a starry sky. One sunny day, Sissa hurried to the royal palace to show the king, who loved games more than anything else!

As the king laid eyes on the beautiful chessboard, his face lit up with joy. "Let’s play!" he exclaimed, clapping his hands. For three thrilling days and nights, they played, moving the shiny pieces with excitement, lost in a whirlwind of strategy and fun.

Finally, the king, his golden crown shining brightly, turned to Sissa and said, "This is the best game ever! What reward do you want? Gold? Jewels? Anything!" Sissa smiled shyly and replied, “Just one tiny grain of rice on the first square. On the second square, please put two grains, and let’s double it for each square!”

The king chuckled, thinking it was a small request. He called the royal treasurer, who began counting the grains. At first, it was easy—one grain, then two, then four. But as they reached the tenth square, the treasurer’s eyes widened. By the twentieth square, they had filled an entire sack! The grains kept doubling, and soon, the numbers were so big that they made the treasurer gasp.

“Your Majesty!” he cried, “By the sixtieth square, we’ll need more rice than there is in the entire kingdom!” The king sat back, stunned, his mind racing. He realized Sissa had taught him a wonderful lesson.

With a grateful smile, he looked at Sissa and said, “You’ve opened my eyes. Small things can become mighty!” From that day on, the king never underestimated little beginnings again, cherishing every small step on the path to greatness.
