In a magical kingdom of sparkling rivers and whispering trees, there lived a king named Midas. Once, he had turned everything he touched into gold! But after discovering that gold didn't bring happiness, he became a wise and gentle ruler. One sunny day, the great god Apollo invited the playful satyr Pan to a grand music contest. All the forest creatures buzzed with excitement, eager to hear who would play the best tune. And guess who was chosen to judge? King Midas!
First, Apollo stepped forward, his silver lyre twinkling like stars. He strummed the strings, and beautiful notes floated into the air like shimmering fireflies. The forest fell silent, enchanted by his magical melody. But when it was Pan's turn, he played a lively tune on his reed pipes that made everyone want to jump, dance, and twirl. Toot! Toot! The music bounced around like a playful breeze, filling the trees with joy.
Caught up in the fun, Midas suddenly shouted, “Pan's music is better!” The air turned chilly, and Apollo’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Your ears,” he said with a knowing smile, “shall match your judgment!” With a magical SPROING! Midas felt something strange on his head. He reached up and gasped! Long, fluffy donkey ears sprouted from his head!
In a panic, Midas rushed back to the palace, hiding under a tall hat. He made his barber promise to keep his secret. But the barber couldn't hold it in and whispered into a tiny hole in the garden, “King Midas has donkey ears!” The reeds nearby, ever so curious, rustled in the wind, spreading the news all over the kingdom.
At the next grand banquet, Midas walked in, his ears flopping. He braced for laughter but was met with warm, gentle giggles. The people weren't mocking him; they were laughing with him! In that moment, Midas realized that worrying about what others thought was far worse than embracing his silly mistake. He accepted his donkey ears with a smile, proving he was more than just a king of gold. From that day on, he cherished laughter, never judging another contest again.
