The Stick That Crowned a King

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

One sparkling evening, the grand Emperor Akbar floated elegantly down the shimmering Yamuna River. The water twinkled like a treasure chest filled with stars, glowing under the rosy sunset. Inside the royal boat, Birbal and several courtiers lounged on fluffy cushions, enjoying the soft, tickly breeze. Suddenly, Akbar’s sharp eyes spotted a tiny stick bobbing on the water, and a cheeky smile spread across his face.

“I have a marvelous idea!” he declared, his voice bubbling with excitement. “Whoever can cross this wide river using ONLY this little stick will be crowned KING for a whole day!” The courtiers exchanged puzzled glances. Cross a vast river with just a stick? It sounded impossible! One by one, they shook their heads, their faces scrunching up in disbelief.

But then, Akbar looked at Birbal, his clever friend. Birbal’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “I’ll take on the challenge, Your Majesty, but I want to be called King right now!” Akbar raised an eyebrow, grinning. “Very well! As of this moment, BIRBAL IS KING! The palace, treasures, and guards are ALL yours!”

“Thank you, Your Majesty!” Birbal beamed with excitement. He snatched the stick and moved to the edge of the boat, crouching down to leap — SPLASH! “No!” the courtiers gasped, jumping to their feet. “You can’t jump! You are our KING!”

“Step aside!” Birbal ordered. “I COMMAND you!” “We’re sorry, but we must keep you safe!” the guards urged. For ten thrilling minutes, Birbal argued passionately, but the guards stood firm.

As the boat drifted closer to the shore, THUMP! It bumped against the bank. Akbar chuckled, his eyes twinkling. “Ah, Birbal! You didn’t cross the river with that stick!” But Birbal raised the stick high, a gleam of triumph in his eyes. “Oh, but I did! I stayed safe, thanks to my loyal guards, and the boat brought me here holding this stick, just as you asked!”

Akbar threw his head back in laughter, his joy dancing across the water. “I cannot outsmart you, Birbal! You truly are a clever King!” As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with swirls of orange and purple, the boat rocked gently, cradling the laughter and cleverness of a true King for a day.
