The Wolf and the Kid

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a sunny meadow bursting with colorful flowers and buzzing bees, there lived a cheerful Mother Goat and her playful little Kid. One bright morning, as the golden sun peeked over the hills, Mother Goat had to hurry to the market to buy fresh, crunchy veggies. She gently nudged her Kid and said, “Listen closely, my dear. You must guard our cozy home while I'm gone. Don’t let anyone in unless they know the special password!”

With wide, sparkling eyes, Kid asked, “What’s the password, Mama?” With a twinkle of mischief, Mother Goat whispered the secret, and Kid repeated it again and again until he knew it by heart. “Now remember,” she said, giving him a soft nuzzle, “only let in those who know this password.” After one last nuzzle, she trotted away, her jingle bell ringing cheerfully.

But lurking nearby was the sly Wolf, hiding in a shadowy blackberry patch. He had heard everything! As soon as Mother Goat disappeared, he tiptoed to the little house and knocked softly on the door. “Who’s there?” called Kid, his heart racing with excitement.

“It’s me! I know the password!” Wolf crooned sweetly, but there was something dark in his voice. “May I come in?” Inside, Kid hesitated, thinking, “You sound just like a wolf!”

“I have a cold!” Wolf replied, trying to sound as innocent as a fluffy lamb. Kid's clever mind whirred. “Show me your paw under the door!” he demanded. Wolf’s heart sank when he remembered his large, gray paw with sharp claws. “Why do you need to see my paw?” he stammered, worry creeping in.

“Because my mama has white feet!” Kid explained, feeling oh-so-smart. Wolf stood there, speechless, staring at his own very wolfish foot, realizing he had no way to trick the clever Kid. Frustrated, he turned and slinked away through the brambles, leaving only the whisper of rustling leaves behind.

When Mother Goat returned, she beamed with pride as Kid excitedly recounted his adventure. From that day on, Kid learned to be wise and trust his instincts, and Wolf learned that sometimes, even the cleverest of plans might not work against a quick-thinking little Kid. In their cozy home, they lived happily ever after, always remembering that true safety requires more than just a password.
