The Jackdaw and the Eagle

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

On a bright sunny day, high above the colorful fields, a stunning Eagle soared through the sky, her golden feathers sparkling like little stars. With her keen eyes, she searched for lunch. Suddenly, she swooped down, catching a plump little lamb from the hillside as if it were a feather! Nearby, a curious Jackdaw watched, his eyes gleaming with excitement. “Wow! I can do that too!” he chirped, puffing up his black feathers to look big and brave.

But Jackdaw wasn’t an Eagle; he was much smaller and better at pecking crumbs than lifting a sheep! Yet, all he could think about was how grand the Eagle looked gliding through the sky. With a determined flap of his wings, Jackdaw readied himself for a daring adventure. He spotted a mighty ram grazing below, munching on the tastiest grass. “If I want to impress everyone, I should aim high!” he thought as he took a deep breath.

With a powerful leap, Jackdaw swooped down and landed on the ram’s fluffy back, digging his tiny claws into the thick wool. “Here I go!” he cawed, flapping his wings as hard as he could. But the ram didn’t even notice him; he just kept chewing his grass, completely unaware of the little bird on his back! Jackdaw flapped and flapped, trying to lift the heavy ram, but soon realized he was stuck!

Panic washed over him as he flapped harder, but the ram continued munching, blissfully ignorant. Just then, a cheerful Shepherd walked by, saw the commotion, and burst into laughter. “Oh my! What a funny sight!” he chuckled, gently untangling Jackdaw from the thick wool. He scooped Jackdaw up with care, still laughing, as they made their way back to the farm.

As they walked, curious children gathered around, eyes wide with wonder. “What kind of bird is that?” they giggled. The Shepherd smiled and said, “It’s a Jackdaw, of course! Though he might think he’s an Eagle!” Jackdaw felt a mix of embarrassment and understanding. He had wanted to be impressive like the Eagle, but now he saw the joy in being himself—no matter how small he was.
