The Jackal and the Elephant

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a vibrant, enchanted forest, where the trees danced in the wind and flowers bloomed in every color of the rainbow, lived a clever jackal named Mahachaturaka. One sunny day, his tummy growled louder than a thunderstorm after three long days without a bite to eat! With his nose twitching, he set off on a journey through the woods, searching for something delicious to munch on.

Just when he was about to nibble on a twig, a mouthwatering aroma wafted through the air. With excitement, he dashed around a leafy bend and gasped! Before him stood a gigantic elephant, its skin shimmering like polished marble. Mahachaturaka’s eyes sparkled with hunger, but he quickly realized that this grand feast would be impossible to eat. The elephant’s tough skin was like a fortress!

As the jackal paced around the colossal creature, a loud THUMP, THUMP, THUMP shook the ground. Out of the shadows, a majestic lion emerged, his golden mane flowing like sunshine. The jackal, quick as a wink, flattened himself and greeted the lion with a wide, friendly grin. “Your Majesty! What an honor to see you! I’ve been guarding this delicious feast just for you!”

The lion peered at the elephant, then back at Mahachaturaka. “I catch my own meals,” he growled, turning away. The jackal couldn’t believe his luck!

Just then, a sly leopard slinked in. The clever jackal jumped on the elephant, puffing himself up. “Uncle Leopard!” he shouted. “Run! The lion just caught this elephant! He’ll be back any second!” The leopard, frightened, dashed away, leaving Mahachaturaka chuckling with glee.

Then a sleek tiger appeared, looking for a snack. “Tiger, my friend!” Mahachaturaka called, “This elephant is all yours! I’ll keep watch for the lion.” The hungry tiger didn’t hesitate and began tearing into the elephant. But the jackal was patient. When the tiger was deep in his meal, Mahachaturaka shouted, “HE’S COMING!”

With a loud roar, the tiger zipped away like a lightning bolt, leaving the jackal grinning. Finally, Mahachaturaka sat down to enjoy his glorious feast, his belly full and heart happy. He had learned that sometimes, with a little cleverness and quick thinking, challenges could turn into delightful adventures!
