The Bees and the Wasps

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a sunny meadow bursting with colorful flowers, there stood a grand, ancient tree. Inside its hollow trunk sparkled a treasure that made every creature's mouth water – a golden stash of honey, glowing like tiny suns! The moment the bees discovered it, their wings buzzed with excitement. “This honey is ours!” they cheered, dancing in delight as they imagined sweet feasts ahead.

But suddenly, a gang of wasps swooped in, their wings slicing through the air like tiny swords. “No, no! This honey belongs to us!” they demanded, their voices sharp and fierce. The grass rustled as curious animals gathered to watch the commotion. The meadow buzzed with heated arguments, and soon, chaos filled the air.

Seeing the trouble, the wise old Hornet, known for his fair judgments, floated down with a gentle buzz. His big, wise eyes sparkled as he listened to the bees and wasps argue back and forth. With every buzzing claim, the air became thicker with tension, but no one seemed to know who truly deserved the honey.

Just then, an old bee with a crown of fluffy white hairs flew forward. “Your Honor,” she said, “I have an idea!” The meadow hushed, all ears and wings. “What if both the bees and the wasps show their skills? Let’s see who can gather the best nectar for honey!”

The bees buzzed with excitement, ready to prove themselves. But the wasps squirmed, their confidence fading. They tried to drown out the idea with protests, but their voices grew weaker. The Hornet’s eyes twinkled, and he smiled. “The bees are eager and ready to create something wonderful, while the wasps hesitate. So, the honey belongs to the bees!”

Cheers erupted from the other animals, and the bees danced joyfully, their wings shimmering in the sunlight. The wasps, though disappointed, realized that actions always reveal the truth. From that day on, the meadow creatures remembered that when words fade away, it is what you do that truly counts.
