The Head That Rules the Body

Vikram & Betaal Tales

A spine-tingling Vikram and Betaal riddle — where a brave king must answer or lose everything!

The evening sky shimmered with shades of purple and gold, and the fresh scent of rain filled the air. Brave Prince Vikram walked towards an ancient temple, feeling a strange tingle in his shoulders. Floating beside him was Betaal, a mischievous spirit with a voice like soft tinkling bells. "Let me tell you a tale of love and magic!" he chimed excitedly.

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a prince named Bharat. He was head over heels in love with a kind girl named Jyoti, who helped her mother wash clothes by the sparkling river. Every day, Bharat would watch her from afar, dreaming of their future together. Little did he know that his best friend, Balu, who was the son of the palace laundryman, loved Jyoti too!

Instead of competing, Balu chose to help Bharat win Jyoti's heart, even speaking to her parents to gain their blessing. The wedding day was a magical celebration, filled with laughter, colorful flowers, and joyful dancing. But Bharat had made a dangerous promise to the fierce goddess Kali—if he could marry Jyoti, he would offer his life on the first new moon after their wedding.

As the new moon rose, a chill filled the air. Bharat led Jyoti and Balu to the shadowy temple, instructing them to wait. He picked up a sacred sword, his heart heavy with the weight of his promise. In a moment of silence, he fulfilled his vow. When Balu entered and discovered his friend lying still, heartbreak filled his heart. Unable to bear the loss, he took the sword and followed Bharat into eternal silence.

When Jyoti entered and saw them both gone, her heart shattered into a million pieces. With tears streaming down her face, she too took the sword, joining her beloved and his best friend. But the goddess Kali, watching from above, was moved by their love. With a flash of dazzling light, she brought them back to life—but in a twist of magic, she switched their heads!

The three friends looked at each other in astonishment, their minds swirling with confusion. Betaal giggled, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Now, Vikram, who is Jyoti's true husband?"

Vikram smiled calmly and replied, “The body that holds Bharat's head is her husband.” In an instant, bright light enveloped them, and they vanished into the night, leaving behind a whisper of their unforgettable tale, a reminder that true identity is found not in our bodies, but in our hearts and minds, where our dreams and choices dwell.
