The Elephants and the Moon Lake

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a land bursting with vibrant flowers and towering green trees, there was a sparkling pond where a joyful herd of elephants played and splashed. The water shimmered like diamonds under the sun, and laughter filled the air. But one year, dark clouds rolled in, and the rain vanished. The pond shrank day by day, until it was just a sad, dry patch of mud.

The wise elephant king gathered his oldest advisors. After much discussion, one elder recalled a tale. “Long ago, I saw a magical lake just five days north! It sparkled like silver under the moonlight!” Excited trumpets echoed as the elephants set off, their huge feet thundering across the land, determined to find their new home.

After a long journey, they finally arrived at the gleaming lake, its waters reflecting the bright full moon. With joyful roars, the elephants leaped in, splashing and creating waves of white foam. But beneath the soft earth, a family of tiny hares lived in cozy tunnels. The elephants’ mighty dancing shook their homes, and panic spread among the hares.

That night, the hares gathered, trembling with fear. “We must leave,” they cried. But one brave hare named Vijaya stood tall. “No! This is our home! I have a clever plan!” The other hares listened closely, hope blooming in their hearts.

The next day, Vijaya climbed onto a rock in the elephants' path. “HALT!” she shouted with all her might. The surprised elephants stopped, staring at the tiny creature. “I am the messenger of the Moon God! Your stomping has angered him!”

The elephant king trembled. “Where can we find this Moon God?” he asked. “He is here tonight,” Vijaya said, her eyes sparkling. “Be quiet and respectful.”

That evening, she led the king to the water's edge, where the moon hung low, shimmering like magic. The king bowed deeply, whispering, “Forgive us, great Moon God,” and quietly backed away.

From that day on, the elephants took a new path, allowing the little hares to live happily in their beloved home. Vijaya, the clever hare, had saved the day with her bravery and quick thinking, proving that even the smallest among us can make a big difference.
