The Clever Hare

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a vibrant jungle bursting with towering trees and blooming flowers, there lived a lion named Bhasuraka. With his golden mane and thunderous roar, he ruled the jungle, but he wasn’t a friendly king. Every day, he roamed the forest, scaring all the animals. They shivered in fear, for Bhasuraka hunted not only for food but for fun.

One sunny day, all the jungle creatures gathered in a hidden clearing. There were deer, rabbits, birds, monkeys, and even the wise old owl. They were worried and knew they needed a plan. “What if we offer him a deal?” said a brave little rabbit. “We can send him one of us each day if he promises not to harm the rest.” With heavy hearts, they approached Bhasuraka’s den, their voices shaking but their spirits strong. “Great King Bhasuraka!” they called, “We will send you one of us every day if you spare the others!”

Bhasuraka agreed, and for a time, the jungle felt safer. But when it was the clever little hare's turn to visit the lion, she had a spark of mischief in her eyes. She was small and quick and had no plans of becoming a meal! As she hopped toward the lion, she spotted an old stone well hidden among the trees. Peeking inside, she saw her reflection shimmering in the water. A brilliant idea bloomed in her mind!

When she reached Bhasuraka’s den, she was late, and the angry lion roared like thunder. “Why are you so late, little hare?” he bellowed. “Oh, mighty Bhasuraka!” she replied, pretending to tremble. “I was bringing more hares for you, but I met another lion—huge and fierce! He claimed to be the true king and captured my friends!”

Bhasuraka’s eyes flared with rage. “Take me to him!” he demanded, his claws digging into the earth. The clever hare led him to the well. “He lives down there, in a strong fortress,” she said, pointing. Curious, Bhasuraka leaned over the edge. Staring back at him was the reflection of a powerful lion.

Furious, Bhasuraka roared at the image, but to his surprise, the lion in the well roared back! Enraged, he leaped into the water, thinking he could defeat his rival. “SPLASH!” The water rippled, and then there was silence.

The little hare hopped back to the jungle, her heart dancing with joy. She had outsmarted the fiercest creature in the forest! From that day on, the animals roamed freely, knowing that cleverness and bravery could conquer even the loudest roar.
