The Secret of True Happiness

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

On a sunny afternoon that sparkled like a treasure chest, Tenali Raman and his good friend Suresh were lounging in a cozy hammock hanging between two friendly mango trees. The hammock swayed gently like a boat on a calm sea, while a warm breeze giggled around them as if it were playing hide-and-seek. Above, the sky was a soft shade of cotton candy pink, and a little bird flitted about, singing a cheerful tune that floated through the air like a happy secret.

From Tenali's kitchen came the sweet smell of rice pudding, tickling their noses and making their tummies rumble with anticipation. Suresh lay back, his eyes sparkling as he stared dreamily at the fluffy clouds. “What are you dreaming about?” Tenali nudged him playfully.

Suresh sat up, his eyes bright like stars. “I’m thinking about the day I will be truly happy!” he exclaimed. He waved his arms excitedly. “I want a grand house by the sea, a garden full of colorful flowers, a shiny carriage with two magnificent horses, and lots of money! Plus, I want a beautiful wife and four clever sons who will be rich doctors and lawyers!”

“And then what?” Tenali asked, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.

“Then,” Suresh spread his arms wide, “I will sit back, feel the breeze, listen to the birds, and munch on delicious food!”

Just then, Tenali jumped up so quickly that the hammock swung wildly—WHOOSH! Suresh clutched the ropes, eyes wide like saucers. The breeze still whispered sweet nothings, the bird sang its merry tune, and the smell of rice pudding lingered, just as before.

“Are you not doing that right now?” Tenali shouted, eyes twinkling with joy. Suresh froze, his mouth opening and closing in disbelief. Slowly, a burst of laughter bubbled up from his belly, echoing through the trees. He realized he was already having the perfect day!

With a heart full of laughter and a smile brighter than the sun, he settled back into the hammock, closing his eyes. Today was indeed a splendid day to be happy, just as he was, surrounded by the magic of the moment.
