The Guest Who Never Laughed

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In the lively city of Agra, a wealthy merchant named Ramdas was bustling about, preparing for a grand dinner. He invited his clever friend, Birbal, known for his sharp wit and humor. Wearing his finest clothes, Birbal arrived at the magnificent haveli, his heart beating with excitement. As he stepped inside, WHOOSH! His eyes widened in awe. The grand hall was filled with men in colorful kurtas, their laughter ringing like music through the air, making the room sparkle with joy.

“Welcome, Birbal Saheb!” Ramdas beamed as he rushed over. “I’m so glad you could make it! But tell me, can you guess who my special guest is tonight?” Birbal’s curiosity piqued. “Let’s find out! How about you tell them a joke?” he suggested, his eyes twinkling mischievously.

Ramdas scratched his head, thinking hard. Finally, with a deep breath, he told the silliest, most cringe-worthy joke ever! It was so awful that even the plates seemed to quiver! But to his amazement, the hall erupted in laughter! People howled and slapped their knees; it was louder than a stampede of elephants!

Yet, amidst all that noise, Birbal noticed a man in a grey kurta sitting quietly in the corner. He hadn't smiled or laughed once! Birbal’s heart raced with excitement. Approaching Ramdas, he pointed to the man. “That’s your true guest!” he declared.

Ramdas gasped in surprise. “But how did you know?”

Birbal chuckled softly. “Only those who truly appreciate humor laugh freely. Everyone else here chuckled on cue, but that man in grey listened honestly.”

Just then, the room fell silent. A wave of understanding washed over everyone, and laughter erupted again, this time genuine and warm. Even the man in grey cracked a small smile, realizing that sometimes, being true was the greatest joy of all.
