The Greedy Crow

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

In the vibrant city of Benares, a cheerful pigeon named Pippin fluttered through the sunny skies. With his soft gray feathers and gentle heart, he loved nothing more than to dive down and nibble on tasty grass seeds. Each evening, he returned to his cozy birdhouse, nestled beside the luxurious kitchen of the town's richest man, feeling happy and well-fed.

One day, a new neighbor moved in next door — a clever crow named Cranky. With shiny black feathers and mischievous eyes, Cranky was always on the lookout for something more exciting to eat. While Pippin enjoyed his simple meals, Cranky's beady eyes sparkled at the delicious aromas wafting from the kitchen, where the cook prepared mouthwatering feasts.

Pippin welcomed Cranky with open wings, but he quickly noticed his neighbor’s greedy nature. Every time the cook clanged pots, Cranky’s eyes grew wide, and his beak watered like a waterfall. One evening, as the sun dipped low, Pippin returned home to find Cranky moaning dramatically. "Oh, Pippin! I’m very sick! You must go on without me!" he groaned, clutching his tummy.

Pippin, sensing trouble, warned, "I think you just want to sneak into the kitchen! Please don’t do it!" But Cranky waved his wing in defiance. "You’re just jealous of my adventures!" With a flap, he darted toward the kitchen once Pippin left.

Inside, Cranky spotted a glimmering fish dangling from a hook. With a leap, he plunged his head into the pot. But CLANG! The lid flew off with a loud bang! The cook rushed in, eyes wide with surprise.

"You greedy bird!" he shouted, trapping Cranky in a net. As the cook plucked Cranky's feathers and sprinkled fiery spices, Cranky's dreams turned to a spicy nightmare.

Later that night, Pippin returned to find Cranky shivering and bald. "Oh, Cranky," Pippin sighed, his heart heavy. "Your greed has led you to this." With a sorrowful flap of his wings, Pippin left, seeking a safer place.

Alone, Cranky lay in the shadows of the night, regretting the wise advice he had ignored. The stars twinkled above, whispering secrets of caution, as the gentle night air wrapped around him, reminding all who heard it of the importance of listening to the wisdom of friends.
