The Grateful Bull

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

In the lively city of Takkasila, there lived a gentle man named Ravi who adored his calf, Delightful. From the moment Delightful was born, Ravi showered him with love, feeding him the finest grains and cozying him up during chilly nights. Delightful wasn’t just any calf; he was a magical bull, strong and wise, destined for greatness.

One bright afternoon, Delightful surprised everyone by speaking! “Ravi, let’s challenge the boastful merchant who brags about his bulls! I want to show my gratitude by pulling one hundred loaded carts!” Ravi could hardly believe his ears, but he nodded eagerly. They found the merchant, who laughed loudly and agreed to a bet of one thousand gold coins!

On the contest day, the air buzzed with excitement. The crowd gathered, their eyes sparkling like stars as Delightful stood proudly with a garland around his neck. But when Ravi shouted harsh words, calling Delightful “stupid,” the bull froze. Hurt and confused, he wouldn’t move a muscle. The crowd gasped, and Ravi’s heart sank in disappointment.

That evening, Ravi found Delightful looking sad. “Why did you call me stupid?” the wise bull asked softly. Ravi’s cheeks turned red with shame. “You’ve always been kind to me,” he confessed. “Let’s try again—but this time, you must speak to me with kindness,” Delightful suggested.

The next morning, with hope swirling in the air, Ravi approached Delightful, holding a beautiful lotus flower. He gently touched his friend’s forehead and asked, “Will you honor me by pulling these carts?” With joy and strength pouring from his heart, Delightful gave a mighty roar and began to pull the heavy carts, moving them one by one! The crowd erupted in cheers, their joy ringing through the valley.

With the last cart in place, the astonished merchant handed over two thousand gold coins, his boastful laughter turned to silence. Ravi hugged Delightful tightly, realizing that their bond had become far more valuable than any treasure. As the sun set over Takkasila, the two friends stood together, knowing that love and respect could unlock the mightiest of strengths.
