The Clever Woman of Vijayanagara

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

In the colorful city of Vijayanagara, where the markets sparkled like jewels and laughter danced in the air, there lived a clever woman named Vidhyulatha. She was famous for her sharp wit and quick thinking. One sunny afternoon, with a twinkle in her eye, she hung a grand sign outside her door that read: "OUTSMART ME AND WIN 1,000 GOLD COINS!" Scholars and philosophers came from far and wide, trying to win the challenge, but they all left scratching their heads, defeated.

Feeling proud, Vidhyulatha thought she could outsmart anyone. But then, one dusty afternoon, a scruffy man showed up at her gate, carrying a bundle of firewood. His clothes were torn, and his wild hair fluttered in the wind, but his eyes sparkled with mischief. “How much for the wood?” Vidhyulatha asked confidently.

“One handful-grain,” he replied, grinning broadly.

“Just stack it in the back!” she ordered, waving her hand.

But the man shook his head. “No, no! I said one handful-grain. Do you know what that means?”

“Of course! I’m not foolish!” she huffed, but doubt crept into her heart.

“Do you know what a hand-sized grain is?” he whispered, leaning closer. “One single grain big enough to fill your entire hand!”

Vidhyulatha froze, her mind racing. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. The scruffy man’s grin widened. “If you can’t pay my price, then you must take down your sign and give me one thousand gold coins!”

“NEVER!” she shouted, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “We’ll settle this in court!”

Days later, they stood before the wise old judge. The courtroom buzzed with excitement like a pot about to boil. After listening to both sides, the judge banged his gavel and declared, “The woman has been outsmarted! Take down the sign and pay the man his coins!”

CLINK, CLINK, CLINK! Vidhyulatha counted out the shiny gold coins, her heart heavy with defeat. As she glared at the scruffy man, she demanded, “WHO are you?!”

With a flourish, he removed his dusty scarf, revealing himself as the famous Tenali Raman, known for his clever tricks! “I wanted to teach you something important,” he said with a twinkle in his eye.

Suddenly, Vidhyulatha’s frown faded, and she felt lighter. She realized the truth in his words. From that day on, she never hung another sign, but instead, she welcomed every chance to learn something new, embracing her journey with a warm and open heart.
