The Honest Merchant

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

In the lively city of Seri, where colorful stalls sparkled in the sun and laughter danced on the breeze, lived two merchants named Baiju and Rohan. Each day, they would roam the streets like cheerful butterflies, selling pots, pans, and shiny treasures. The sun beamed down as Baiju approached a little, weathered house, where a poor grandmother and her playful granddaughter, Lily, lived.

With her eyes sparkling brighter than stars, Lily spotted Baiju’s dazzling trinkets and tugged at her grandmother's sleeve. “Oh, Grandma! Can we trade our old black plate for that shiny bracelet?” she chirped, bouncing like a bouncy ball. The grandmother sighed, revealing their only plate, which was covered in years of thick black soot. Baiju grimaced, wrinkling his nose. “This old thing? It’s worthless!” But a tiny voice inside him whispered to take a closer look. He scratched the bottom and gasped—there was a glimmer of gold!

Hiding his thrill, Baiju smirked. “I might give you a few copper coins if you’re really in a hurry,” he added, pretending disinterest. He slipped away, dreaming of riches.

Later, Rohan arrived. With kind eyes that sparkled like the night sky, he examined the soot-covered plate. When he discovered the gold, his heart soared! “Grandmother, this plate is more precious than all my treasures!” The grandmother felt warmth in her heart as she looked at Rohan’s honest face. They made a fair trade that felt like a sprinkle of magic filling the air.

Suddenly, Baiju returned, his face red with anger. “He stole from me!” he shouted, rushing to the river to catch Rohan. Just as he arrived, he saw Rohan’s ferry sailing away into the mist, taking his dreams with it. With a cry of frustration, Baiju fell to the ground, realizing his greed had cost him everything.

Meanwhile, Rohan flourished, filling his days with laughter and kindness. He never forgot the grandmother and Lily, helping them with all they needed. In the heart of Seri, the whispers of compassion grew like flowers, reminding everyone that true treasures come from the goodness in our hearts.
