The Goat and the Fox

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

On a sunny afternoon, the forest buzzed with the sounds of cheerful birds and swaying leaves. But Fox was having a very bad day. He had chased a quick rabbit who got away, fumbled a shiny egg he had stolen, and now he was stomping through the woods, growling to himself. Suddenly, Fox slipped and—whoosh!—he tumbled backward into an old, dark well.

Splash! The cool water surrounded him, and Fox paddled and scratched, but the walls were too smooth to climb. He huffed and puffed, wishing he had been more careful. Just then, a soft clatter of hooves caught his attention. Curious Goat leaned over the edge, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Hey, Fox! Is there water down there?” she asked, tilting her head.

Fox, feeling cheeky, perked up. “Oh yes, Goat! This water is cooler than a shady tree and sweeter than the ripest fruit!” Goat's eyes widened, and she licked her lips. “Really? Is there enough for both of us?”

“Absolutely!” Fox exclaimed, his tail wagging with excitement. “Come on in! You’ll love it!” Without another thought, Goat jumped in with a splash! She took a big gulp, savoring the refreshing taste. But before she could say a word, Fox leaped onto her back, climbed to her horns, and with a mighty push, he sprang out of the well, landing safely on the grass!

Goat blinked up in surprise, water dripping from her fur. “Fox! What about me?” she bleated, eyes wide with disbelief. Fox smirked down at her. “If only you had thought ahead before jumping in!” he chuckled, then trotted away, leaving Goat to ponder her hasty leap.

As the sun began to set, Goat bleated for help, her voice echoing through the quiet forest. Soon, a kind farmer heard her and came with a sturdy rope. Goat climbed out, soaked but relieved. That day, she learned to always think before jumping into the unknown, knowing that sometimes, it’s wise to look before you leap.
