The Goat and the Crooks

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

Once upon a time, in a lively village where laughter danced in the air, lived a kind Brahmin named Mitra Sharma. He adored helping others and worshipping the bright sun. One sunny morning, he visited a nearby village to celebrate a wonderful festival. There, a cheerful farmer gifted him a fluffy goat with twinkling eyes and a joyous bleat that made everyone giggle. Mitra was overjoyed! He lifted the goat onto his shoulders and whistled a merry tune, heading back home.

But lurking in the shadows of a tall tree were three sneaky crooks, their bellies rumbling like distant thunder. They spotted the delicious goat and their eyes sparkled with mischief. “What a tasty dinner!” one crook whispered, rubbing his hands together. They hatched a clever plan to trick the Brahmin.

As Mitra walked on, the first crook dashed ahead, blocking his path. With a sly grin, he bowed deeply. “Oh dear sir, are you feeling alright? It looks like you’re carrying a rather strange dog!”

“A dog?!” Mitra gasped, wide-eyed. “This is a GOAT!”

The crook feigned innocence and continued on his way, barely hiding a chuckle. Unnerved but amused, Mitra continued. Soon, he met the second crook, who clasped his hands dramatically. “Oh no! You’re carrying a dead calf! That’s quite alarming!”

“DEAD CALF?!” Mitra panicked. “This is a LIVING GOAT!”

“Of course, if you say so!” the second crook smirked, waving him off.

Just then, the third crook jumped in front of Mitra, eyes wide with pretend horror. “Oh, please! Drop that donkey! Everyone's staring!”

Mitra froze, his heart thumping wildly. What if all these strangers were right? What if his goat was a shape-shifting goblin? In a fit of fear, he dropped the goat and ran home as fast as his legs could carry him, locking the door tight behind him.

The three crooks burst into laughter, their bellies shaking with glee. They quickly grabbed the goat and celebrated their clever trick with a feast fit for kings. As the stars twinkled overhead, they devoured their delicious meal, proving that sometimes, the trickiest tales can make even the strongest hearts doubt what they believe.
