In a cheerful village surrounded by tall, green hills, there lived a girl named Inger. With her bright blue eyes and shiny golden hair that glimmered like sunlight, everyone thought she was the prettiest girl around. Inger loved to admire herself in the mirror, but she didn’t realize that true beauty comes from being kind and caring.
One sunny day, Inger's mother gave her a warm loaf of bread and said, “Take this to the old woman across the muddy field.” The bread smelled so delicious that it made Inger's tummy rumble. But when she looked at her sparkling new shoes, a frown appeared on her face. “I don’t want to step in the muddy puddles!” she thought. With a sly smile, she dropped the loaf into the mud. “Now I can walk over it without getting dirty!” she giggled, stepping onto the soggy bread.
Suddenly, the ground trembled! WHOOSH! Inger felt herself being pulled down, down, down into a dark, cold world beneath the earth. Strange shadows floated around her, looking just as sad as she felt. “Why is this happening to me?” she cried, but her voice faded into silence.
Days turned to months as she remained trapped on her soggy bread. From the darkness, she heard whispers. Children were telling her story, warning each other: “Be kind, or you might end up like Inger.” She even heard the old woman sighing, missing the girl who never delivered her bread.
Then, one day, Inger's heart began to soften. She felt sadness not for herself, but for the wasted bread and the old woman who was hungry. A bright tear slipped down her cheek, shining like a tiny star. Suddenly, magic swirled around her! In an instant, she transformed into a small, grey bird and soared into the bright winter sky.
From that day on, Inger fluttered through the village, sharing crumbs with hungry sparrows and seeds with little mice. Each tiny gift she shared was filled with love, and as she discovered the joy of helping others, her heart sparkled brighter than ever before.
