In a bright and bustling town, there lived a girl named Inger. With her sparkling blue eyes and golden hair that danced like sunbeams, she was the prettiest girl anyone had ever seen. Inger loved to show off her beauty, twirling around with her nose held high, often sneering at others. “Look at me!” she would say, her laughter ringing out like chimes in the breeze. But inside, she was as cold as a winter’s night. She delighted in being mean, capturing little flies and pulling off their wings, giggling as they flopped helplessly.
One sunny morning, Inger's parents asked her to deliver a warm loaf of bread to her sweet, old grandmother who lived across a dark, muddy marsh. “Hurry along, dear! She’s hungry and waiting!” they urged with smiles. Inger slipped on her shiny white shoes, feeling like a princess, and set off with the fresh loaf nestled under her arm.
But as she approached the squishy marsh, she gasped. “Oh no! My beautiful shoes!” she cried, looking at the muddy mess. Without a second thought, she tossed the loaf into the mud and stepped right on it to cross. “Goodbye, old bread!” she laughed, but suddenly, the ground below rumbled with a loud WHOOOOSH! A whirlpool opened up, and Inger felt herself swirling down, down, down into a strange and shadowy kingdom!
Days turned into months, and Inger stood frozen as ghostly creatures slithered around her, whispering secrets that sent shivers through her. At first, she was furious, but as time went by, she felt a deep loneliness. She thought of her hungry grandmother and the wasted bread. Tears of regret trickled down her cheek, warm and heavy.
In that moment, the earth trembled, and Inger began to rise. She burst through the marsh, transformed into a small, gray bird! Though she wasn't beautiful anymore, a warm glow filled her heart. From that day on, she searched high and low for crumbs of bread, sharing them with hungry birds. With every crumb she found, Inger spread happiness, filling the world with kindness and joy.
