The Girl Who Made the Stars

African Folktales

A beloved African folktale retold for young readers — rich with wisdom, wonder, and timeless lessons.

Once upon a time, in a village near the vast, golden savanna, there lived a spirited girl named Naledi. She was twelve, with bright eyes that sparkled like diamonds and a heart filled with dreams. But dark clouds loomed over her village, for the night sky was a heavy blanket of black—no stars, no moon, just silence.

Three weeks had passed since her beloved grandmother had gone to the stars, leaving a void where laughter and stories once danced. Each evening, as the cooking fire crackled softly, the air would fill with the delicious scent of roasting corn, but now, it felt empty and sad. Naledi missed her grandmother’s warm tales that spun magic into the air.

One still night, as the village slept, Naledi sat by the fading fire, the last embers glowing like tiny rubies. She thought of her grandmother and how she used to light up her world. Feeling a spark of courage, Naledi scooped up two handfuls of warm ash and flung it into the night sky. To her amazement, the ashes transformed into glowing sparks, bursting into life with POP! SPARK! FLASH! Each flicker lit up the dark, creating a breathtaking fireworks display.

Her heart raced with excitement! She tossed more ash, and a shimmering river of light appeared—the Milky Way! With one final deep breath, Naledi reached for the brightest ember, glowing like a sunset. She hurled it into the sky, and it soared up, up, up, until it became the radiant Moon, shining down on the village.

Awoken by the brilliance, villagers emerged, their faces alight with wonder. “LOOK!” they cried, pointing to the sky. Naledi stood proudly by the fire, her hands dusted with ash. The oldest elder smiled at her, saying, “You didn’t lose your grandmother. She has been lighting the way for us all along.”

From that night forward, the sky sparkled with stars, bringing warmth and magic to the hearts of everyone, reminding them that love can shine brightly, even in the darkest times.
