The Gardener's Loyalty

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a kingdom bursting with colorful flowers and lush, green trees, there lived a powerful Emperor named Akbar. One sunny afternoon, he wandered through the royal garden, breathing in the sweet scent of blooming roses and feeling the soft breeze tickle his cheeks. But suddenly, his foot caught on a sneaky little rock hiding among bright petals. “THUMP!” The Emperor tumbled to the ground, his fancy robes getting all dirty. His face turned as red as a juicy tomato, and his voice boomed like a thunderstorm, “SEIZE THE GARDENER!”

In a heartbeat, the devoted gardener, a gentle soul who had cared for the royal garden for twenty years, was thrown into a dark dungeon. “That gardener is careless! I want him punished at dawn!” the Emperor roared. News of this reached Birbal, the Emperor's clever advisor. He hurried to the dungeon and whispered a daring plan to the gardener. With a twinkle of courage in his eyes, the gardener nodded, ready to face his fate.

At dawn, the gardener was brought before the Emperor, who was still fuming. The grand hall was silent, filled with curious courtiers eager to see what would happen next. Heart racing, the gardener bravely walked up to the throne and, to everyone’s shock, spat right at the Emperor’s royal feet! GASP! The court froze, eyes wide in disbelief. Soldiers rushed to grab him, and the air crackled with tension.

“HOW DARE YOU!” thundered Emperor Akbar, his voice echoing like a fierce lion. Calmly, Birbal stepped forward, his eyes sparkling with wisdom. “Your Majesty, this gardener is loyal! He faced punishment without fear because he knows it was an accident.”

The Emperor's anger began to melt away as he thought about Birbal’s words. “Release him,” he finally said softly. “And let’s remove that pesky stone from the path.”

The gardener beamed with gratitude, and with a wave of his hand, the Emperor brought back the sun’s warmth. The royal garden bloomed even brighter, and the bonds of loyalty between the Emperor and his gardener grew stronger, becoming a treasured part of their story.
