The Gardener's Lost Treasure

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a splendid palace surrounded by gardens bursting with colorful flowers, there lived a clever gardener named Kalu. With hands as green as the leaves he tended, Kalu was famous for his knack for saving coins instead of buying new things. For twenty years, he secretly buried shiny gold coins beneath a grand pear tree, watching over it like a dragon guarding its hoard.

One sunny morning, as birds chirped merrily and butterflies fluttered about, Kalu raced to his friend Birbal’s house, his eyes wide and fearful. He stumbled at Birbal's feet, shaking like a leaf in the breeze. "Oh, Birbal! My treasure! A thousand gold coins! They’ve vanished! Someone has dug them up!"

Birbal, the wisest man in the kingdom, helped Kalu to his feet. "Calm down and tell me what happened," he said, his eyes sharp like an eagle's. Kalu wiped his tears, explaining that only the pear tree, wriggly worms, and the sky knew about his secret stash. "How could anyone find it?" he sobbed.

Birbal's mind buzzed like a busy bee. "The only way someone could find your coins," he mused, "is if they were digging for something else." With a flick of his wrist, he gathered all the doctors and herbalists in the city. One old physician raised a hand. "I asked someone to gather roots from the pear tree for a sick merchant," he said.

"Who collected them?" Birbal inquired, his eyes narrowing. "His servant," replied the doctor. A shifty servant was summoned, looking anywhere but at Birbal. "You dug up roots, didn’t you?" Birbal asked with a sly grin. The servant stammered, “Yes, sir, but I found something else!” His face went pale as a moonlit ghost.

Birbal leaned in, his voice firm yet gentle. "Be honest and return what was lost." The servant, realizing he was caught, dashed home like a startled rabbit. Moments later, he returned, breathless and clutching a heavy bag. With a clink, clink, clink, he poured out the shining gold coins.

Kalu’s heart soared as he counted them, joy bubbling inside him like a fizzy drink. "You’ve returned what was lost!" Birbal smiled. Kalu laughed and danced, but Birbal added, his eyes twinkling, "Next time, my friend, hide your treasure in a safer place than under a pear tree!”

And so, Kalu learned to guard his riches wisely, while Birbal delighted in solving yet another mystery with cleverness and a sprinkle of magic.
