The Gardener and the Emperor

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a vibrant kingdom filled with dancing flowers and chirping birds, there lived a gentle gardener named Raju. Every day, he took care of the Emperor Akbar’s magnificent royal garden, ensuring the blossoms were bright and the trees were tall. One sunny morning, as Emperor Akbar, dressed in his splendid robes, strolled through the garden, he admired the colorful flowers. But suddenly—THUMP!—his royal foot stumbled over a hidden stone, and down he tumbled, like a giant fluffy jelly! “ARREST THE GARDENER!” he bellowed, his face turning the color of a ripe tomato. “Tomorrow—EXECUTION!”

Poor Raju was shackled in heavy chains, quivering with dread. How could a silly stone cause such trouble? That night, while he sat in a dark, damp dungeon, a shadow slipped through the bars—it was Birbal, the Emperor’s clever advisor. With a twinkle in his eye, he whispered, “Listen, my friend. We’ll turn this around!” Raju’s heart danced with hope as Birbal shared his daring plan.

As dawn broke, the kingdom buzzed with excitement. Raju was brought before the grand throne, where the Emperor sat, looking as fierce as a stormy sky. The courtiers watched, their eyes wide with curiosity. Raju knew he had to be brave. With a deep breath, he stepped forward and—SPAT!—right at Akbar's feet!

Gasps filled the air as everyone froze. “WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!” Akbar roared. But Birbal, calm and wise, stepped forward. “Your Majesty, this gardener is loyal. He would rather face punishment than live with an unfair accusation.”

The room fell silent, and Akbar’s angry frown began to soften. “Release him,” he finally said, his voice gentle. “And fix that troublesome stone.” With a wave of his hand, Raju was freed, and the throne room erupted with cheers.

Raju learned that sometimes standing up for what’s right can look like defiance, but with a kind heart and a bit of cleverness, even the fiercest storms can turn into sunshine. From that day on, laughter and joy filled the kingdom, as Raju tended to his flowers, reminding everyone that understanding can bloom in the most unexpected ways.
