On a sunny morning in the lively city of Vijayanagara, Tenali Raman was enjoying a delicious breakfast of fluffy idlis and spicy chutney when a loud knock interrupted his meal. It was the kotwal, the head of the city’s police, looking anxious and flustered. “Tenali! Help! A bunch of sneaky thieves is on the loose, stealing from everyone! The king is FURIOUS!” he exclaimed, waving his arms like a windmill in a storm.
Tenali’s eyes sparkled with cleverness as he stroked his chin thoughtfully. “I have an idea!” he said, a grin spreading across his face. He turned to his wife and whispered, “Let’s tell everyone we have a mountain of treasure hidden right here in our house! Spread the word to the neighbors, the fruit sellers, and even the washing ladies!”
With a twinkle in her eye, his wife agreed, and soon, whispers of hidden treasure filled the air like the sweet scent of mangoes in summer. Before long, a new servant with shifty eyes arrived at their doorstep. “I’m looking for work!” he said, glancing around suspiciously.
Tenali welcomed him in and, that very night, said loudly enough for the servant to hear, “We should hide our treasure in the well! No thief would ever think to look there!” With a mighty heave, they dragged a heavy chest across the garden and, with a loud SPLASH, dropped it into the well. The servant’s eyes gleamed with excitement. “I know where the treasure is!” he whispered, hurrying back to tell his gang of thieves.
Under the cloak of night, the thieves snuck into the garden, ready for adventure. They pulled up bucket after bucket of water from the well, thinking of the treasure waiting for them. At last, just as the sun began to rise, they hoisted the chest up. With eager hands, they broke the lock and opened it—only to find… rocks! Heavy, boring rocks!
The thieves gaped in shock, their dreams of riches crumbling. Just then, Tenali strolled out in his pajamas, yawning widely. “Oh, how wonderful! You’ve watered my garden all night! Look at my plants—they’re practically dancing with joy! I should call the kotwal to reward your hard work!”
With a swoosh, the kotwal appeared with his guards, grinning. The thieves, tired and embarrassed, found themselves caught. By morning, the whole city was laughing, delighted by how the thieves ended up watering Tenali’s garden instead of stealing treasure. And so, Tenali, with his cleverness and quick thinking, turned the tables on the greedy thieves, reminding everyone that sometimes, what you want can lead you to do unexpected things!
