The Frogs Who Desired a King

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a sparkling pond, where the reeds danced to the gentle breeze and colorful lilies floated like little boats, there lived a joyful group of Frogs. They leaped high into the air, splashed in the cool water, and croaked cheerful songs under the warm sun. With no king to boss them around, they felt happy and free.

But one sunny afternoon, a curious Frog with a shiny green back hopped up and said, “Life is just too boring! We need a king to make things exciting!” The other Frogs agreed, their eyes sparkling with dreams of a grand ruler. “Yes! A king will make us feel important!” they croaked with glee. So, they sent a wish to Jupiter, the great king of the gods, asking for a ruler.

Jupiter chuckled from the clouds, thinking, “These Frogs don’t know what they’re asking for!” To teach them a lesson, he tossed a gigantic log into their pond with a loud splash! The Frogs squealed in fright, diving into the muddy reeds, wondering, “What has come to rule us?”

As the water settled, the log floated gently like a giant lily pad. A brave little Frog hopped closer and exclaimed, “It’s just a log!” Soon, they discovered they could bounce and dive off it, laughing and splashing in delight! But the older Frogs grumbled, “This king is useless! We want a real ruler!” They sent another message to Jupiter, demanding someone exciting.

This time, Jupiter sent a tall, majestic Crane who swooped down with glistening wings. The Frogs stared in awe, but their excitement quickly turned to fear as the Crane began to hunt! One by one, the Frogs found themselves in danger, and their joyful croaks turned to desperate cries for help.

Jupiter watched from above, sad to see the chaos unfold. “You asked for excitement, and now you see that not all kings bring safety,” he called down. The Frogs trembled, realizing how precious their peaceful pond had been. When the Crane finally flew away, silence returned to the pond.

Gathered together, the Frogs felt the weight of their wish. They learned that a simple, quiet life could be a treasure far greater than they ever imagined. With hearts full of gratitude, they croaked softly to one another, promising to cherish their freedom and the joy of their peaceful pond forever.
