The Frog and the Mouse

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a sunny meadow by a sparkling pond, lived a little Mouse named Mabel. With bright eyes full of curiosity, she often gazed across the shimmering water, wondering what magical wonders lay on the other side. Tall reeds swayed like dancers, and colorful dragonflies zipped by, leaving trails of glittering light. One glorious morning, as Mabel peered longingly at the pond’s far side, a cheeky Frog named Freddie popped his head out of the water with a big grin.

“What’s so fascinating over there?” croaked Freddie, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

“Oh, Freddie!” squeaked Mabel, her tiny heart racing. “I want to see the other side, but I can’t swim!”

Freddie’s smile widened, but something sneaky flickered in his gaze. “No problem! Just tie this reed to your leg and mine. I’ll pull you across!”

Excited and trusting, Mabel tied the green reed around her leg and Freddie’s. “Let’s go!” she chirped, delight bubbling inside her.

At first, everything was perfect! Freddie paddled through the water as Mabel splashed beside him, giggling in the sunshine. But when they reached the pond’s deepest part, Freddie’s mischievous plan took a dark turn. “Time for some fun!” he thought, and with a mighty leap, he dove below!

Suddenly, Mabel was pulled underwater! Her tiny paws kicked and flailed, but she couldn’t break free. Just as panic set in, Freddie surfaced with a triumphant croak. Yet, he soon felt a shadow above him—a magnificent Hawk had spotted Mabel!

Before he knew it, the Hawk swooped down, and in a flash, both Mabel and Freddie were lifted high into the sky, tangled together by the reed! “Help!” croaked Freddie, his laughter now turned to cries of fear. As they soared, he realized the trap he set for Mabel had ensnared him too.

Far below, the pond became a tiny dot as the Hawk carried them away. And as the breeze fluttered around them, the whispers of the meadow creatures carried the tale of Mabel and Freddie—a tale of mischief turned to a lesson learned.
