The Frogs Who Asked for a King

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a sparkling green marsh, where the sun danced on the water and the mud was soft and squishy, lived a joyful group of Frogs. They leaped and splashed, basking on lily pads and munching on buzzing bugs. Life was a wonderful hopping adventure, and their croaks filled the air with happiness. But one day, a proud Frog with a shimmering coat shouted, “This is boring! We need a king to make things exciting!”

The other Frogs perked up, croaking in agreement, “Yes! A grand ruler!” Their voices echoed through the marsh, and soon, the air buzzed with demands for a king. High above, the god Jupiter shook his head at their wishes, thinking they didn’t understand how lucky they were. But instead of ignoring them, he decided to teach them a lesson. With a flick of his wrist, he sent a giant log crashing into the water with a mighty splash!

The Frogs squeaked in shock and dove into the mud, shivering in fear. But curiosity eventually won, and they peeked out to see the log floating quietly. “What is this?” they wondered. One by one, they hopped onto the log, sliding and sunbathing. For a moment, they forgot their complaints. But soon, grumbling began again. “This king does nothing!” cried a Frog wearing a crown of twigs.

Once more, they called to Jupiter for a real king. This time, he sent a tall Crane with long legs and sharp eyes. The Crane stalked into the marsh, and one by one, Frogs became its dinner! The joyful croaks faded, replaced by trembling whispers of fear. “Help us! We don’t want this king!” they cried.

Jupiter watched as the Frogs learned their lesson too late. They realized that the freedom and fun they once had was a treasure, much more precious than the excitement they wished for. Grateful for their peaceful home, their croaks turned into sweet songs that echoed lovingly across the marsh.
