The Frog and the Cobra

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In the heart of a vibrant, green forest, there was a cozy stone well where King Gangadatta, a lively frog, ruled his colony of amphibious pals. They splashed and sang all day, but there was a catch! His relatives were a bunch of grumpy frogs who croaked complaints nonstop. “You jumped too high!” one would croak. “You croaked too loud!” another shouted. Poor Gangadatta felt like he might pop from all the fuss!

One sunny day, after a big leap of frustration, he decided to hop away and seek a clever solution—or maybe a little mischief! As he bounded through the tall grass, he stumbled upon a dark burrow owned by a sly cobra. “What if I could befriend that sneaky snake?” he thought, his little heart racing with excitement.

“Hello there, slithery friend! I’m King Gangadatta. Let’s be pals!” he called out. The cobra hissed back, “Frogs and cobras? Ha! I might just eat you!” But Gangadatta was clever. “How about I show you where to find a feast of annoying frogs?” he proposed. The cobra's eyes glinted at the thought of a meal.

The crafty frog led the cobra into the well, and the feasting began! One by one, the nagging frogs disappeared, and Gangadatta felt lighter—until he realized too late that the cobra's appetite was limitless! Soon, even the friendly frogs, and his own little tadpoles, vanished, leaving only silence.

One gloomy morning, the cobra hissed, “I’m hungry, King! Find me more frogs!” Panic bubbled in Gangadatta’s chest as he looked around at the empty well. With a shaky voice, he replied, “I’ll find more for you!” But instead of searching, he made a daring leap into the bright, warm sun, leaving the hungry cobra behind.

As he hopped away, he remembered the laughter of his family and friends, a reminder that sometimes, in escaping our problems, we might invite trouble that swallows everything we hold dear.
